Tips for Buying Binoculars for Bird Watching
![]() |
Bird watching is an interesting yet relaxing and rewarding outdoor activity. Bird watchers do more than just look at the birds. They study them, they record their findings, they catalog what they have seen. In order to make the most of this hobby you will need some supplies, starting with a good pair of binoculars. Binoculars for bird watching aren't too different from binoculars for any other purpose. However, you will need to know what kind of binoculars you are looking for. Some bird watchers prefer the most powerful lenses they can get while others do not need so much magnification.
For example, one bird watcher may be just fine with a 6 power pair of binoculars while another may prefer an 8 power. It might just be that the person with the lesser power binoculars can hold their hands more steadily, therefore getting a better view of the bird. You should definitely try to test several different powers before deciding which is your favorite. The average range for bird watching is around 6-8 magnification. This allows you to see far away as well as up close. And, as anyone familiar with birds will tell you, you will often be viewing them from far away.
You can buy birding binoculars at many stores in your local area. You should definitely shop around so that you can compare different models. There are name brand binoculars as well as binoculars from lesser known names. Often you can find a cheaper pair from a less recognizable name that are just as good as the big brand names. You should definitely make sure that whatever optics you choose comes with some kind of warranty plan. If your binoculars don't work properly or malfunction during use your warranty should cover their replacement or repair.
Binoculars for bird watching are only one part of a good bird watching supply kit. You should also have a good hat to shade your face, comfortable apparel to wear outdoors, a tape recorder to record details about the birds you've seen, a digital camera with a fast shutter speed to capture images, and a bird identification book that fits into your pack or pocket. There are many books out there, including those that cover certain localities and regions. Various supplies like these make the pursuit of bird watching more effective and satisfying.
