Choosing a Bird Watching Cap
![]() |
One of the most useful supplies other than the binoculars you must have for bird watching is your bird watching cap. You might think that a hat is a matter of fashion but it is much more than that. Any seasoned bird watcher will tell you that birds are attracted to reflective surfaces. When the sun is shining, your face is quite reflective. The birds can see you better, and therefore will fly away when you approach. When you shade your face with a hat, it becomes less reflective. This means you can blend into the landscape more effectively and not scare the birds as easily you would if you weren't wearing a hat.
A good hat can help keep your face cool and shield you from the burning rays of the sun. You should always also wear sunscreen. Many people go bird watching in woodsy areas. Wearing a hat can protect you from ticks, although you should spray yourself down with repellant as well. You will have less of a chance of finding a tick in your hair or on your scalp if you're wearing a hat that covers your head. As you can see, a hat serves many purposes when you are bird watching.
Of course, a hat can also be a fashion statement. You can find hats that feature pictures of birds or convey a message. You can even have a hat custom made. This is a great idea if you are part of a bird watching club. You could have hats printed with the club logo and sell them to raise proceeds for the club or give them away to new members. If you do not have a custom printing shop near you, you can do the job yourself on the Internet at sites like Cafe Press. You can have anything you want printed on lots of items including hats and apparel.
When you go shopping for a bird watching cap, you should look around to find the best hat for your needs. If you can try various hats on, you should. Not everyone's head is the same size and although hats are often adjustable, you need to know if you're going to be comfortable. Light colored hats are good for summer weather because they don't trap in as much heat as a dark color like black. If you can't find a good bird watching theme hat, choose a solid color or go for a hat emblazoned with your favorite sports team. Any type of cap you prefer will likely do for bird watching purposes.
