Why Do You Need a Bird Watching Hat?

Newbies to the world of bird watching will often notice that other bird watchers wear hats. You may wonder if you need a bird watching hat. The short answer is usually yes. There are many benefits of wearing a hat when birdwatching outdoors. One reason is to protect your head and face from the damaging rays of the sun. A hat can shade your face and make you feel more comfortable. Another reason you may want to wear a hat when bird watching is to shield your face from the birds.

This sounds silly, I know. But there is definitely scientific reasoning behind it. Birds are attracted to shiny things. When you are outside and it is hot, your face is quite shiny to birds. A hat helps shade your face and reduces the amount of shine that the birds can perceive. Therefore you may be able to get closer to the birds without scaring them away. You might think that a hat worn for bird watching can't possibly be fashionable. As a matter of fact, there are many great looking hats that you can choose from. You may want to go for a traditional fishing hat or baseball cap. The more shade the hat offers, the better.

Many people like their hats to make a statement. You can wear a hat emblazoned with your alma mater or your favorite sports team. Or, you can go for a novelty topper that shows the world you love bird watching. There are hats that actually say 'I Love Bird Watching' as well as hats that feature pictures of birds on them. If you cannot find the perfect hat for you, then you can make your own.

You may have a specialty store in your area that will put anything you want on a bird watching hat. If not, then you can try sites like Cafe Press. You simply upload your preferred design and the company will print it on a hat, T-shirt, or other item. If you belong to a bird watching club, this can be a great way to get hats for everyone in your group that have the name of the club on them. You may want to shop around to find the best deal on custom printed hats before making a decision as to which ones you want to go with.
