![]() |
A national park is a federally protected piece of land set aside for the purposes of conservation and preservation. For this very reason, bird watching in national parks is a popular hobby among nature lovers. Birds flock to national parks for breeding, migration and habitation purposes. You will find an amazing variety of familiar and rare birds in national parks. If this sounds interesting to you, the first step is to join a birding club such as the Audubon Society. This society has branches in every state so there is sure to be one close to you.
Bird watching with a group is a fun, educational experience. You get to meet new people and learn more than you ever could on your own. National parks are popular Audubon Society field trip locations. What you have to look forward to on your birding trip depends on where you are. For example, Acadia National Park in Maine is home to 338 different species of bird. Herons, sandpipers, eiders, warblers and more make this park their home.
In Virginia you will find the Blue Ridge Parkway. This protected stretch of land is the habitat of many beautiful birds. Examples of what you may find include owls, green warblers, kinglets and other species either live in this area or at least pass through during migration season. In Arkansas is the Buffalo National River area. Birds found here include Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, an incredible array of songbirds, and more. There are at least 200 different species in this area of the state. You will find that every state has its own array of beautiful and fascinating birds.
When you go bird watching in national parks, you will need some equipment. A good pair of binoculars is crucial for getting the best view. One of the best brands is Stokes. The husband and wife team behind this brand are expert bird watchers who are renowned for their expertise. Stokes binoculars are made especially for the purpose of bird watching. They are light enough to carry around with the rest of your gear and resistant to wear and tear. You will also need something to record notes such as a notepad and pen or even a tape recorder. Some bird watchers also carry a camera. If you belong to a bird watching club like the Audubon Society they will advise you what to pack for field trips.
