Bird Watching in San Diego: Tips for Success

San Diego has many treasures waiting for you, including stunning scenery and beautiful wildlife. Many bird watchers enjoy their hobby in this warm and welcoming California city. If you want to go bird watching San Diego, you will need to make some preparations. First, you should decide if you want to join a club or go it alone. Joining a bird watching club is a fun way to enjoy this hobby. You will learn much more than you would on your own and get to meet other people who share your love of birding. You may even develop lasting friendships with other club members. Certain people do prefer bird watching by themselves, as a solitary pursuit. It's a matter of personal preference.

Before you embark on your bird watching adventure, you should make sure you are equipped with the proper supplies. The first thing you will need is a good pair of optics. Binoculars are most often used for bird watching. You may choose a pair with a magnification strength of 6x, 7x, or 8x. It matters less about the magnification and more about how steady you can hold your hands. For example there are birders who do just fine with a 6x pair of binoculars then there are those who want something more powerful.

You will also need something to record your findings. A compact sized tape recorder or pen and pad will do just fine. Many bird watchers today have computer software which they use to store and organize their notes after returning from the field. You may also want to take a camera with you to capture images of the birds you see. When out in a woodsy area or near the water, be sure to use insect repellant. You should also wear sunscreen, even in overcast weather. A hat to shade your face is another wise idea.

When you go bird watching San Diego, you will get to see some beautiful and fascinating birds. For example, at the Tijiuana Estuary you might see the American Peregrine Falcon, Beldings Savannah Sparrow, or the White Pelican. At Mission Trails Regional Park, species include swallows and raptors. There are many estuaries, nature parks and wildlife refuges in the San Diego area where you can enjoy incredible bird watching experiences.
