The Caribbean paradise that is the Dominican Republic is more than just a destination for beach lovers. It's also a destination for bird lovers. The Red-legged Thrush is a commonly seen bird in the Dominican Republic region. This tiny bird is plentiful yet shy, and has gray speckled plumage with red legs and red beak. Then there's the Bananaquit. This little yellow bird has a bright belly and black head with a white stripe. The Gray Kingbird is another commonly spotted species. These small yet majestic gray and white birds hold themselves with a regal stature.

There are sea birds in this area of the world as well. The Royal Tern is a good example of a bird often seen near the ocean. Another water bird you're likely to see is the Brown Pelican. These fish eating birds are quite plentiful in the Dominican Republic. A bird that is smaller than a pelican but way more colorful is the Broad-billed Toby. This bird is bright green with red plumage. There are also thrushes, hawks and hummingbirds that live in this area. There are many different optics like binoculars and scopes that can give you a great view of birds that are far away. When choosing a camera, you should go for one with the best zoom capacity possible. High zoom capacity means you can get an incredible picture of birds from a distance. You should also take along a small tape recorder and record your notes. It's easier than messing with a pen and paper. Many birdwatchers have computer software they use to keep all the details from their excursions. You definitely want to take pictures and notes because bird watching in the Dominican republic is an experience to remember!
